Hidden in Plain Sight - Exhibit at Terrain Gallery

May 13 - May 28, Terrain Gallery - 628 N Monroe | Gallery Days: Thurs-Sat 4-7pm,

In partnership with APIC Spokane, with the support of the Amplifying Community Stories grant, artists Margaret Albaugh and Frances Grace Mortel share visual narratives that amplify Asian American community stories. They are joined by another Asian American artist, Remelisa Cullitan, displaying their work series, A Life of Rice and Bread.

Through their diasporic lens, they examine the unseen – the complexities of cultural identity hidden in visible spaces.

Indivisible (photography, Margaret Albaugh) explores racism on a human level, allowing participants to explore identity development. Intimate portraits reveal vulnerable but strong individuals whose lives have been shaped in one way or another by racism.  margaretalbaugh.com/indivisible

Diaspora Recipes (multimedia, Frances Grace Mortel) takes a closer look at the intersections of food culture, migration, colonization, and identity. It follows two Asian American women as they talk about their journey and passion for food and cuisines while navigating the challenges of integration in the US. mortelmedia.com/diaspora-recipes

A Life of Rice and Bread (mixed media, Remelisa Cullitan) shares personal visual narratives shaped by repetitive conversations and stereotypes. Examples of biracial erasure, a separation of self-identity and forced expectations of performance, and never feeling like one or the other.

About the shorts program:

BOUNDLESS (58mins)

Sometimes our most intimate stories drift beyond casual understandings of time, transcending into something more. Like ocean waves, they ebb and flow through our daily lives arising in objects and spaces which remind us where we came from. These filmmakers tap into those tides of experience, pushing the boundaries on storytelling by rethinking, remixing, and removing the limits of genre and structure.

CAAMFEST ON DEMAND

Please purchase a ticket for our CAAMFest On Demand programs. Ticket buyers will receive a code to access the virtual screening. More instructions to view are on our CAAMFest On Demand FAQs.

Virtual programs are available for purchase and may be viewed between May 12 – 22nd, 2022 but viewers will have a 24 hour window to watch the program once you hit “play.”

Courts métrages : Filmer le travail

samedi 07 mai 2022

Ausgang Plaza || Portes : 13 h | Projection : 13 h 30

Our Stories Our Visions at the Carl Maxey Center

“Our Stories Our Visions” Art Exhibition

Carl Maxey Center
April 9 - June 11, 2022
Reception: April 9 @ 5-7pm

“Our Stories Our Visions is not a display promoting individual artists. The images on the wall are a textured quilt displaying the culture (stories) of marginalized peoples. It is full of the textures and colors and shapes of their visions. This show is to be inspiring and give hope to our communities. It is also so youth may be inspired and see the creative possibilities of expressing themselves through the arts.” - Bob Lloyd

The artists names are in a guest book at the Carl Maxey Center where you will find how you can purchase work.

The Shotgun Studios will handle the purchase of work in the show.

You can investigate and get a deeper understanding of the artists by going to Our Stories Our Visions at 4comculture.com.
